More Information About Alness

Alness is a town in Ross and Cromarty, Highland, Scotland. The name is pronounced (roughly) Al'-niss by some Ross-shire residents and Oll-ness' by others. It lies near the Cromarty Firth, with the town of Invergordon to the east and the village of Evanton to the southwest.

Geography

Divided by the River Averon, the town is in two parishes, Alness in the west and Rosskeen in the east. Historically these were in different presbyteries. Today there are three churches; Free Church, Church of Scotland and Baptist.

Transport

The town is bypassed by the A9 road. It is also at the southern end of the B9176 "Struie road" to Bonar Bridge, which used to be the A836 before the construction of the Dornoch Bridge.

Alness railway station is on the Far North Line. The nearest commercial airport is at Inverness.

History

In September 1715 there was a skirmish between Jacobite clans such as the MacKenzies, MacDonalds under the Earl of Seaforth, and pro-government Munros, Rosses, MacKays under the Earl of Sutherland. The Jacobites drove their opponents over Struie to Bonar.^[3]

Alness has won three Britain in Bloom awards since 2002.
